The partnership that resulted in the name Austin Healey was comprised Donald Healey who designed the cars and Austin the manufacturer. The series started in 1953 as the 100-4 then the 100-6 and then in 1959 the 3000 series. The final and ultimate production of the Austin Healey range arrived in 1964 (The 3000 mk 3 BJ8) The mk 3 now had even more power than before and even more luxury compared to earlier models. The Big Healeys, as they were nicknamed, now had an elegant wooden dash, redesigned exhaust system, back to twin Sus, wind up windows and brake servos to give extra stopping power. Over 90% of production went to the USA. Over 72000 in all were built between 1953 and 1967 but changes in US safety and pollution regulations coupled with BMC rationalisation programme sounded the death knoll for this iconic sportscar. At the beginning the appeal was its performance but today's owners consider the beauty to be the equal of its performance. Fans from both eras agree they are fun to drive and a true expression of the heart and soul of a sports car.
Our BJ8 was UK registered in 1964. After a year it was exported to the USA but was repatriated in the early 1990s. The car then underwent a full restoration in 1999. It is a remarkable example of the marque and great fun to drive, as well as having a sensational soundtrack! The car never fails to get second looks on the road. Park up and watch the people gather. It will draw more attention than a modern Ferrari. This one is not for the shy or retiring!
You have to try a classic sports car to realise how much more fun they are and how much more stylish they are than a modern car. We are yet to meet someone who does not fall in love with the Big Healey!
